Autumn
Well, it seems that autumn has finally arrived, well at least it has here in Northleach in the heart of the Cotswolds. Today whilst out and about with my regulars there was a chilly breeze along with fine rain, the type that gets you really wet! The dogs don't seem to be mind though, in fact they seem to be re-energised with the cool wet conditions. I hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter and I would welcome any feedback/suggestions for future editions - ed

Firework Phobia
I thought we'd discuss a subject that affects many dogs this time of year and that is firework night phobia. My own dog Max is petrified of fireworks and thunder whereas my springer Skye is completely unconcerned.
Some suggestions for getting your dog through bonfire night are:
Make sure he has been walked and relieved
himself before darkness falls
and the fireworks start. Try to create a safe "den" for him in a quite
place or allow him to hide wherever he feels safe. If you know where he
will prefer to go prepare the area with his favourite blankets and
toys. Close curtains and blinds in that particular room to cut down on
the flashes.
Another good way to help your dog is to use a product such as our Dorwest
Scullcap & Valerian to calm and relax your dog before the
fireworks start.
You can also work on desensitising your dog to fireworks and loud
noises. This takes time but basically you would use distraction
techniques when there are loud noises around such as using food treats
or involving your dog in his favourite game, whilst being upbeat and
confident yourself.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
UK Terrier Group Colours: Red,fawn,white,black,blue, brindle,brindle/white Lifespan: 10 - 42 years
History: A product of cross breeding between the Bulldog and a Terrier. Bred originally for bull and bear-baiting which was prohibited in England in 1835. The breed is bold and fearless and needs firm handling when in the company of other dogs.
What are they like to own?
Energy: High Exercise: 1-2 hours per day Barking: High Aggression: Medium
Can be destructive if
left alone. They can be boisterous and a "handful" so this must be
considered when thinking of purchasing one. They should also be
socialised with other dogs at an early age.
General opinion seems to be that they are good with families and
children although I have heard of some that can nip.
